I was initially interested in this idea after I moved to a neighborhood in center city Philadelphia that has little access to grocery stores. After relying on apps like Instacart to have my groceries delivered to me, I began to wonder what other people in the city did to get their groceries and what efforts were being made to bridge the gap.
The design of the data and the site itself were mocked up in Figma and went through several stages of redesigning, trying to find the best way to tell this story. I wanted to keep the design simple so it would be readable but still visually appealing.
Food Insecurity is such a vast epidemic that is swept across the nation, effecting nearly every county in every state. Because of this, I was over-encumbered with data. For this project, I sifted through countless reports, on both a national and local scale, to try to find the best and most relevant information. Orginially, this project was intended to be a solutions-focused piece, focusing on if the solutions to this problem actually work. However, that information is hard to find, so this project ultimately ended up being a story reporting on how it's changed.
